Romney ignores (or lies about) strong government role in Poland’s Economy

Romney lies about Poland EconomyOnce again Mitt Romney does not check his facts (or simply disregards them) this time in Poland on Tuesday, where he hailed Poland’s economy on the last leg of his gaffe filled trip abroad making it seem a Republican wonderland – a place of free enterprise, individual empowerment and small government.

However, as noted by the Associated Press, while Poland has enjoyed a robust economy and boasts free enterprise, his characterization of having small government is debatable at best – yet another Romney fabrication or gaffe at worst.

” Even 23 years after throwing off a communist command economy, the Polish government continues to have a strong presence in people’s lives: it gives women $300 for each baby they have, doubling that sum for poor families; it fully funds state university educations; and it guarantees health care to all its 38 million citizens.

And while Poland’s economic growth has certainly been impressive in recent years, this is partly the result of economic redistribution in the form of subsidies that have been flowing in from the European Union since it joined the bloc in 2004.” SOURCE

With a growth rate of 4.3 percent last year and projected growth around 3 percent this year, Poland has one of the fastest growing economies in Europe, however, according to the International Monetary Fund, total government expenditure as a percentage of GDP was about 44 percent last year – compared to 41 percent in the United States.

The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down on The Young Turks below, noting that Poland believes so much in big government that they provide:

  • Health care to all its 38 million citizens
  • Fully funds state university educations
  • Gives families $300 for each baby they have and doubles that figure for poor families
