October: an important month for awareness

October an important month for awarenessOctober is an incredibly important month for causes with the nation focusing on Breast Cancer Awareness, Domestic Violence Awareness and National Energy Action.

Last Monday, the White House was illuminated pink to mark the first day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month wiht President Obama issuing a Presidential Proclamation, noting in part:

“This month, we stand with the mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, and friends who have been affected by breast cancer, and we recognize the ongoing efforts of dedicated advocates, researchers, and health care providers who strive each day to defeat this terrible disease. In memory of the loved ones we have lost and inspired by the resilience of those living with the disease, let us strengthen our resolve to lead our Nation toward a future free from cancer in all its forms.”  You can read the full proclamation here.

This month also marks Domestic Violence Awareness month with the President Obama issuing his fourth proclamation in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (read the President’s proclamation) noting “While government must do its part, all Americans can play a role in ending domestic violence.”  .  Earlier this year, President Obama directed federal agencies to develop policies to assist victims of domestic violence in the federal workforce.  (read the Presidential memorandum).  Through Vice President Biden’s 1 is 2 Many Campaign, the White House released a public service announcement featuring professional athletes and other role models speaking out against dating violence.  (You can watch the PSA announcement and read more here.)

October is also National Energy Action month, with President Obama calling on the American people to “recognize this month by working together to achieve greater energy security, a more robust economy, and a healthier environment for our children” in an official proclamation. The President is also working what is called an all of the above strategy to help the United States achieve energy independence.   You can watch the video below to see the progress made so far along with Obama’s plan for the future.
