After hearing that Westboro Baptist Church planned to protest in front of their concert in Kansas City, rock band the Foo Fighters hit back with their own counter-protest- riding through the city on a pickup truck blasting Rick Astley’s Rick Roll anthem “Never Gonna Give You Up”, on Friday, August 21, 2015

Drummer Taylor Hawkins could be seen waving a sign saying ‘You got Rick Roll’d, again’ as amused crowds filmed the band riding through the streets. Westboro Baptist Church first denounced the Foo Fighters in 2011, condemning the band as teachers of “fornication, adultery, and idolatry”. In response, the band dressed up in wigs, brandishing signs saying ‘keep it clean’, which you can see in the video at the bottom of the page.

The Foo Fighters are currently finishing their tour of the U.S before they set off to play several dates in Europe on November 5, and the video of their latest encounter with the Westboro Baptist chuch, is provided courtesy of Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri:

You might recall that the Westboro Baptist Church received a unique counter-protest back in August 2011 when the Foo Fighters fought back with a little down home serenade for them.

The Westboro Baptist Church lined up outside Kansas City’s Sprint Center ahead of a concert to protest the Foo Fighters, who they said were promoting “fornication, adultery, idolatry (and) fags.”

The band became a target for the Westboro Baptist Church after posting their Hot Buns video in August. “The entertainment industry is a microcosm of the people in this doomed nation: hard-hearted, hell-bound, and hedonistic,” Fred Phelps wrote on the church’s website. “[The Foo Fighters] have a platform and should be using it to encourage obedience to God; instead they teach every person who will listen all things contrary to him: fornication, adultery, idolatry, fags.”

Dave Grohl and the band had the last laugh after performing a comedy song in front of picketing church members from a flatbed truck while wearing trucker hats, wigs and fake beards.

The band played “Keep It Clean (Hot Buns)”, which included the line: “I’ve got a hankering for something, think I’m in the mood for some hot man-muffins. Mmmm, sounds so fine, yes indeed.”

Fans of the group went wild as Grohl cried out:

Ladies and gentlemen, God bless America! Land of the free, home of the brave! It takes all kinds. I don’t care if you’re black or white or purple or green, whether you’re Pennsylvanian or Transylvanian, Lady Gaga or Lady Antebellum, it takes all kinds! Men loving women and women loving men. Men loving men and women loving women – you know we all like to watch that…

You can watch the counter-protest from the Foo Fighters’ YouTube page below, which was prefaced by:

On Aug. 30th, 2011 Westboro Baptist Church called for a picket of the Foo Fighters show in Kansas City. We had a little something up our sleeve. God Bless America.
