The Next Civil Rights Victory: Weed Or Women?

aarom3Bill Maher asked the question, “Will marijuana be the next victory for the civil rights movement?”

REALLY????? I am all for the legalization of marijuana, but when I heard this, I couldn’t help but be stunned and pissed off. Pot may be legally recognized before women? This is okay with Americans? Are you a woman who accepts this? I. AM. NOT. I find it infuriating that a DRUG may see recognition and acceptance by the federal government before women do.

Alice Paul penned the Equal Rights Amendment in 1923. That’s NINETY years ago and guess what? It is still not in the Constitution.

As an advocate and an activist for women’s rights, I hear liberal people explain why women will never see equality, or how it isn’t feasible now. I hear them explain that with the current Congress, it won’t pass. Yeah, yeah, yeah, blah, blah, blah. Okay, I get it. It won’t be easy. But there was a time when people would have laughed in your face if you told them women would be able to vote and run for office. Alice Paul, Lucy Burns and a number of other dedicated women made SURE that the right for women to vote was secured into the U.S. Constitution despite the fierce opposition they were facing at the time. They went to jail. They were tortured and attacked by angry mobs. I ask the naysayers about that. What if Alice and Lucy listened to the folks who told them the fight for women’s suffrage was a waste of time or should be put off for a more ‘appropriate’ time???  We’d still be waiting.

The time to have a national conversation about the ERA is NOW! Not in a few days, or a few months, or a few years, or when we get a more “receptive” Congress.

Weed? Really?

If liberals and Democrats continue to accept that the ERA will never pass, or feel that it’s too much of an imposition to contact their local congressional representatives and let them know they DEMAND EQUALITY FOR WOMEN, then stop asking for or expecting rights. Put on your apron and call your man ‘Master.’ Accept that women will keep earning less than men for the same job title. Accept that women in the military will earn less than men while they fight and die for “freedom.” If the ERA were ratified, women would no longer have to fight every single battle over and over and over. We wouldn’t even have to WORRY about the GOP voting against fair and equal pay because equal pay WOULD BE FEDERAL LAW!

State laws can be overturned and repealed, so every little victory we see for women is vulnerable. All we need is some Tea Party Evangelical to get elected and these piecemeal laws will become a distant memory.

How is America the best country in the world when the women who make-up 51% of the population are not recognized?

Politicians are not going to surprise us one day and hand us these rights wrapped up in a nice Tiffany bow. President Obama still refuses to talk about the ERA. Politicians are ignoring requests to make it a part of their platform. The ONLY way they will address this is if YOU demand it.

Liberals love to criticize women of the GOP. We accuse them of having Stockholm Syndrome and call them Stepford wives. We ridicule them when the GOP politicians vote against equal pay and ask, “How can you vote for a party that refuses to grant you equality?” How are the liberals any different when we accept that the ERA is a non or a dead issue? This makes us hypocrites. Again, if you make no effort, you should expect no equality.

Think about this when marijuana is legal before women are recognized as equal citizens in the United States of America. If this comes to pass, maybe you can legally get really stoned, watch a funny movie while snacking on some Monsanto product and forget that fun fact.

Remember, all MEN are created equal. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
