2014: An Open Letter To Democratic Candidates From A Voter

aarom3Nate Silver made a prediction about the 2014 midterm election on his FiveThirtyEight blog: Senate Control in 2014 Increasingly Looks Like a Tossup

He said it is very possible that Republicans will gain a majority in the Senate or close to it.

Mid-term elections usually see a terrible voter turnout. The three groups that usually stay home are women, Hispanics and African-Americans.

Despite the proclamation from SCOTUS that we no longer have a problem with racism in America, the recent reaction to the Zimmerman verdict has illustrated that racism is still an issue.

Democrats need to court African-Americans.

Democrats also need to court Hispanics. We can’t expect Marco Rubio to hand Democrats the vote; we need to ask for it and explain why it’s the better choice.

Democratic officials have a very special weapon to SECURE the women’s vote. SECURE IT! Are you paying attention Senators and Representatives? You should be.

The message is simple:

Women – We Have Your Backs!

How? Well, it’s easy and the National Organization for Women (NOW) has made it even EASIER!  Equality. The Equal Rights Amendment. That’s just a start but it’s HUGE!

NOW won’t endorse or provide political contributions to politicians who are not on board with all the paths to securing the ERA into the Constitution. Sign on to all paths to equality and tell everyone. Explain why it’s important. INFORM your constituents. Most people don’t even realize the ERA was never ratified into the Constitution. People think equal rights for women are already secured. They. Are. Not. You can read all about it HERE. The ERA affects every woman (and man) in this country, so inform, inform, inform!

We have witnessed an unprecedented attack on women’s rights and civil liberties with the Tea Party and their push to legislate evangelical morality. If you haven’t already noticed, women are pissed off. And I am not talking a little pissed. We are monumentally pissed. We have a few allies in certain politicians but not enough. Not even close.

If you take a look at the response Wendy Davis received with her courage and specific message, you’ll be able to understand the kind of leadership the public cheers and longs for. We LOVE when politicians have backbone. Have you paid attention to public reaction to Elizabeth Warren? She stands up for the people and we LOVE HER for it. We will RUN to the voting booth for the candidates who let us know they are fighting for us. We’ll make memes for you so that every day there is a reminder. We’ll write articles about how GREAT you are. We’ll make sure to do these things as the election approaches. Your open support will get you FREE advertising from us. WORD OF MOUTH and social media will help you, maybe even more than political contributions.

Make a YouTube video and say something like:

Hi!  I am (fill in the blank –senator or rep). I hear you. You are a voter and I hear you. Not only will I fight against the politics that strip away your right to choose, I will help you achieve equality – equality that is secured into the Constitution. You won’t have to worry about a new elected official who might overturn or repeal existing laws that grant equality. Granting equality is actually ridiculous. Equality is a birthright and as your senator/representative, I will take the necessary steps to make sure women don’t have to fight this long battle anymore. I support and will vote for the Equal Rights Amendment. Women deserve equal pay and the ERA will make it federal law. I will also work toward creating and supporting legislation that guarantees your right to privacy. I see what Republicans are doing regarding reproductive choice. I support the women of the United States of America!

Okay, that’s not all perfect and professional but you get the gist, right? The Democrats in the strategy booth can figure out the finer points. 😉 BE BOLD. In other words, stop with the weak, wishy-washy Democratic stance. Republicans have a strong and specific message. It’s working for them. Count on GOP voters on November 2014 to show up. If all a Democratic candidate says is “I support women,” all liberal voters hear is “blah blah blah.” That’s a big fat fail. People will STAY HOME on voting day and ignore you. You must give them a reason to want to vote.

And then you have to actually DO what you promise. Lip service on your part will secure Republican seats. The public can smell BS. Don’t assume otherwise.

Bring on the Obama campaigning. Reach out like you have in presidential elections. Take no prisoners with your message. Hit youth. Be creative. Tell us what you’re doing. We want to know.

Don’t just ask us to contribute a donation to help YOU get elected. Give us a reason. Show us you’re worth it.

People respond VERY FAVORABLY to a no-nonsense message backed up with action. You’re probably busy governing but many of us are on Facebook for a good portion of our days, and when you pay attention to what people are talking about on social media, you find that we want strong leaders with defined messages.  Platitudes are worthless. They don’t work anymore. Remember 2010?  If Democrats lose seats in 2014, it will be because of your POOR messaging and campaigning. How do common people respond to folks like Wendy Davis? Hint: THEY LOVE HER. It’s not rocket science.

You really have the advantage here. Use it. Did I mention that women are angry?

FIGHT FOR US and RUN with women’s issues. Court us. We will vote for you if you do. Stop campaigning like it’s 1996. The Tea Party lunatics are destroying this country and YOU – DEMOCRATS – need to grow a pair.

Please. Ignore us at your own peril.
