American National Anthem played at Buckingham Palace after 9/11 – VIDEO

American National Anthem played at Buckingham Palace

On September 12, 2001 the troops at Buckingham Palace played The Star Spangled Banner in a tribute to the thousands who lost their lives.

The day after the September 11, 2001 attacks, stranded Americans congregate outside Buckingham Palace in London, England. They can’t go home because a no-fly order is in operation.

The changing of the guard is a military ceremony that has been performed countless times at Buckingham Palace, however on this day the Queen orders the Guards to play the Star Spangled Banner as a sign of the UK’s sympathy for the USA. Americans can be seen in tears, holding their hands over their hearts.

An astonishing departure from tradition, Brits are also moved to tears when this clip is televised. Even Prince Andrew can be seen standing at attention.

As reported by The Telegraph, at the time:

Standing beyond the palace railings, many of the 5,000 Americans broke down in tears and held their right hands over their heart in salute.

At first, the anthem, played by the band of the Coldstream Guards, was heard in a hushed silence and then slowly, one by one, many started singing until the words of The Star Spangled Banner echoed across Green Park.
