Oracle Team USA have won a nail-biting showdown with Emirates Team New Zealand to win the America’s Cup. It completes a dramatic turnaround in fortunes for Oracle who faced a seemingly unsurmountable 8-1 deficit.
They dominated the last race, showcasing the major improvement in boat speed on the upwind leg of the race. The team won the best-of-17 summer series to keep the trophy it won three years ago.
British four-time Olympic champion Sir Ben Ainslie helped guide Oracle Team USA to victory. New Zealand fans had all but begun celebrating what seemed like an inevitable sporting and economic windfall but now face returning home empty-handed.
