In January 2012 Melinda Coleman and her daughter Daisy’s hellish nightmare began. Daisy, now 16, was raped by Matthew Barnett and his friend Jordan Zech in Maryville, Missouri. Both boys confessed to the assault on the then 14 year-old Daisy. The rape was recorded on an iPhone and the rapists left the teen girl on the doorstep of her home in below-freezing temperatures wearing only a tee-shirt and sweatpants. According to Sheriff’s reports, they propped Daisy up against the door as she was vomiting. Melinda heard a scratching at the door and assumed it was the dog. Daisy had a history of sleepwalking — years earlier, she had wandered outside. When Coleman undressed her daughter for a bath, she saw redness around her daughter’s genitalia. Daisy told her mother it hurt and she began crying. Coleman said, “Immediately, I knew what had happened.”
Daisy told police that the last thing she remembered was being handed a tall glass of alcohol by Matthew Barnett who told her that if she didn’t drink all of it, she was a “bitch.”
“They called it the ‘bitch cup,’” Daisy Coleman said, “and it’s a really, really tall shot glass. I think it had lines. Like, if you drank that much, you were some rank or whatever. Like, you’re a B-word if you only take half of it.”
Daisy and her 13 year-old friend had snuck out to be with the boys late that evening. The girls had already been drinking. Both girls has been assaulted and according to the Sheriff’s report, the younger girl said although she said “no”multiple times, a 15 year-old-boy undressed her, put a condom on and had sex with her.
Barnett was arrested for sexual assault. Zech was taken into custody for recording the assault on the iPhone. He explained to police that he thought Barnett and Daisy were just “dry humping,” and not actually having intercourse.
Matthew Barnett’s grandfather, Rex Barnett, is a prominent political figure in MO. He served four terms as a Republican State House Representative. According to Opposing Views, Rex also had political ties to the prosecutor Robert Rice, who dropped the charges against the teen rapists.
Rex Barnett denied to the Kansas City Star that he intervened in the case in any way. Rice called the rumors of political favors in the case “a red herring.” No one committed a crime that January night,” said prosecutor Robert Rice. “I will not participate in a public lynching of anybody,” he told radio station KCUR. Rice dropped all charges two months after the alleged assault.
“They just dropped it all. The prosecuting attorney would never tell me why,” said Melinda Coleman. “To this day, they have never told me absolutely why it was all dropped.”
Soon after the charges were made, Melinda started receive hostile phone calls from people threatening to beat up her son. She was fired from her job at a veterinarian’s clinic. Melinda went back with a hidden tape-recorder and asked why she had been terminated. Her former boss, Sally Hayse, and a friend of the Barnett family, told her that it was “putting stress on everybody in here” to have Coleman around.
Coleman, who moved to Maryville in 2009 after her husband was killed in a car accident, left town with her children to escape the harassment. She was trying to sell her home when it burned down. The Maryville Fire Department have not determined the cause of the fire.
This morning, hacktivist network Anonymous – which has gone after the Church of Scientology, Westboro Baptist Church, Paypal and various foreign governments – has announced, “If Maryville won’t defend these young girls, if the police are too cowardly or corrupt to do their jobs, if justice system has abandoned them, then we will have to stand for them. Mayor Jim Fall, your hands are dirty. Maryville, expect us.”
