Gun Violence in Las Vegas: A Call To Sanity Or Just Another Day In America?

It was only a matter of time. With the escalating gun violence in this country, with people going into eating establishments and retail shopping establishments openly carrying assault weapons, with armed anti-government white supremacy groups going to “defend” people like Cliven Bundy, it was only a matter of time before some lunatic decided it was time to declare war on the government and call it a revolution. And that is precisely what happened in Las Vegas this past Sunday.

After loading up on guns and ammo, Jerad Miller told neighbor Kelly Fielder that he and his wife Amanda were off to “do what we gotta do” and that they were departing for an “underground world.” His wife Amanda then gave Fielder a hug and said, “I am so sorry.” Fielder thought it was just talk, even though the couple was wielding a .38 caliber handgun and an AR-1 rifle and an arsenal of ammunition in a red cart. “I thought he was talking outside of his neck,” she said.

Fielder told authorities that she had heard Jerad make anti-government statements before, including his desire to overthrow the government and murder police officers, but didn’t feel they were indications of anything wrong. She told police that the couple also liked to dress up like the Batman character the Joker and his sidekick Harley Quinn. Fiedler, who described herself as Amanda Miller’s best friend, said that Jared was “a very controlling person” and intimated that his wife, Amanda, wasn’t thrilled with his anti-government stance. Pleased or not, she went along with him and in the ensuing violence, two police officers and a civilian were murdered before the couple killed themselves. The civilian, Joseph Robert Wilcox, 31, had a concealed weapon and went to confront Jared in the Walmart where the couple went after shooting the officers in a CiCi’s Pizza restaurant. His weapon did him no good when Amanda came up behind him and shot him several times in the ribs.

Fielder said that in the past, Jerad had boasted about killing police officers and painting swastikas on their bodies. She said the couple had traveled with her to the Bundy ranch earlier this year to take part in the armed standoff with government officials but that she, Fielder, didn’t stay.

In retrospect, Fielder says she wishes she had called police when the couple took off on foot on Sunday morning. Really? So do I. So do the families of the people they killed. If Fielder were standing in front of me right now, I’d have a few questions for her, starting with what made you think that nothing was up when a white supremacist announced his intention to go do what he had to do while being armed to the teeth?

So here’s my question to the rest of us: Is this enough to finally get our people in Congress to sit up and take notice? Is this enough to at least institute a system where there are background checks on every individual who owns or purchases a firearm? Is this enough to finally put the brakes on the availability of assault weapons and large clips of ammunition? Or are we going to continue to see the kind of senseless violence that has now robbed another three families of their loved ones? Are we going to continue to bear witness to yet another college campus shooting? How long will it be until another crazy with a gun invades an elementary school and slaughters first graders? What if someone manages to get past security in the halls of Congress and opens fire on some of the representatives and senators? Will THAT be enough to make them sit up, take notice and protect the rest of us in the attempt to protect their own asses?

People around the world look at us in this country and simply cannot believe what they are seeing. And who can blame them? The vast majority of people in the United States, including gun owners, want background checks. The vast majority of people in the United States, including gun owners, don’t think that terrorists should be able to purchase firearms. The vast majority of people in this country, including gun owners, are sick and tired of turning on the news and hearing about yet another insane act of violence involving guns. But the wishes vast majority of people in this country are being ignored in favor of the lobbying efforts by the NRA to insure that gun manufacturers continue to reap profits that are bathed in the blood of the citizens of this country.

The Second Amendment was NEVER intended to result in some jerkoff white supremacist with the IQ of a flea to have the ability to go kill people just because he has some Hitlerian fantasy about the way things ought to be. It was never intended to make guns normally used in war available to any schmuck walking down the street with enough money, or the thieving ability, to lay his hands on one. The Second Amendment was written in a time when we didn’t have a fully formed military, when we didn’t have fully formed police departments and in a time when we had just broken free from a repressive government regime that had all of those things. So our founding fathers put it into the constitution and stated: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

There is nothing well regulated about everyone and his brother and his insane cousin running around with AK-47s hoisted over their shoulders at your local Target store. There is nothing well regulated about people with mental problems having access to guns. There is nothing well regulated about gun shows where anyone with enough money, including terrorists, felons and the mentally ill, can go in and buy anything they damned well please without so much as a look at their driver’s license.

I get all this blowback from so-called “responsible” gun owners whenever I suggest that we need to institute some common sense gun laws in this country. Well, this is what I have to say to you: If you think that background checks are infringing on your rights, you are NOT responsible. If you think that any weapon should be available for sale at any time to anyone, you are NOT responsible. You’re just some troll from the NRA trying to make people who actually are responsible gun owners think you’re one of them. But you are not. You are the reason 20 first graders from Sandy Hook never saw second grade. You are the reason why there are two more widows grieving the loss of their husbands who were doing nothing more than having lunch when they were shot down in cold blood. You, with your nonsense about how only a good guy with a gun is the antidote to a bad guy with a gun, are the reason Joseph Wilcox is lying on a slab at the morgue. You are what is wrong with this country.
