“Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged
by the United Sates or by any state on account of sex.”

This simple, gender inclusive text – the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) – would make gender discrimination a federal offense and it would make equal pay, federal law. It is not in the Constitution – yet.

Anti-Feminist Phyllis Schlafly led the charge to stop ratification of the ERA in the 1970s and she succeeded. She lied and warned that equality would result in unisex bathrooms. She said that women would be drafted. But what she failed to tell her loyal following was that Congress has ALWAYS had the ability to draft women. THEY HAVE CHOSEN NOT TO!

Schlafly’s fear tactics and lies convinced anough people to vote against gender equality and the Amendment languished.

There is a new push to ratify the ERA and on September 13, 2014 thousands of men and women will gather on the west lawn of the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. at the We Are Woman rally to proclaim that the time to ratify the ERA is NOW and that every eligible American citizen should be able to vote without hassle.
