Rep. Pete King (R-NY) reacted swiftly to the announcement by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) that he was running for the Republican presidential nomination, saying Cruz is closer to being a “sideshow entertainer” than “the leader of the free world:
The Republican Party and the American people have to be able to find a more qualified candidate for president than Ted Cruz. Shutting down the federal government and reading Dr. Seuss on the Senate floor are the marks of a sideshow entertainer, not the leader of the free world.
King was later questioned about those comment’s by CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. Instead of backing off his comments, King dug his heels in further, responding:
We need intelligent debate in the country. Ted Cruz may be an intelligent person, but he doesn’t carry out an intelligent debate. He oversimplifies, he exaggerates and he basically led the Republican Party over the cliff in the fall of 2013. He has shown no qualifications, no legislation being passed, doesn’t provide leadership and he has no real experience. So, to me, he is just a guy with a big mouth and no results.
Asked if he would support Cruz were he to win the Republican nomination, King responded:
I hope that day never comes. I will jump off that bridge when we come to it.
