Blues legend B.B. King “passed peacefully in his sleep at 9:40 pm Pacific time May 14 2015” according to the official B.B. King website. Mr. King was 89 years old.

His daughter, Patty King, told CNN he died in Las Vegas where he had been receiving home hospice care after suffering from dehydration.

As CNN reports, “The Mississippi native’s reign as ‘king of the blue’ lasted more than six decades and straddled two centuries, influencing a generation of rock and blues musicians, from Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan, to Sheryl Crow and John Mayer.”

Several musicians took to social media to mourn the loss, such as famed Beatles drummer Ringo Starr who wrote: “God bless BB King peace and love to his family, Ringo and Barbara.”

Lenny Kravitz wrote: “BB, anyone could play a thousand notes and never say what you said in one. #RIP #BBKing.”

Blues guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd wrote: “Farewell BB King. You were like a father to me in many ways over the years. The world is a much better place because you were here. Rest In Peace my friend. The Thrill Is finally Gone. ‪#‎BBKing‬ ‪#‎RIP.‬”

In one of the more poignant tributes, Eric Clapton posted a short video on Facebook, saying: “He was a beacon for all of us who loved this kind of music, and I thank him from the bottom of my heart.”
