Ted Cruz & Louie Gohmert Team Up For Another Planned Parenthood Temper Tantrum

Cruz-Gohmert

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and his crazy Tea party colleague Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) have joined forces, and together they’ve drafted a letter (PDF) which they sent to the National Portrait Gallery demanding the Smithsonian remove a bust of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger from its “Struggle for Justice” exhibit, featuring well-known leaders of social movements. The letter currently has the support of two dozen House Republicans.

Texas lawmakers sure hate the idea of affordable healthcare. They also don’t seem to have a grasp on reality, facts, history or anything even resembling reason. Remember a few weeks back when Senator Cruz praised Rosa Parks and suggested she be on American currency? He seemed to be unaware that Parks was a supporter of Planned Parenthood – the family planning organization Cruz wants to defund and destroy. Oops.

The letter conservasplained to the the gallery’s director that the presence of the bust “is an affront both to basic human decency and the very meaning of justice.” After citing the debunked claim that Planned Parenthood sells fetal tissue for profit, the group then purposely twisted a Sanger quote in an effort to sway the decision, “We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population.”

Sanger’s letter outlined how she wanted black leaders to join her effort to promote birth control access, fearing that opponents would disseminate such unfounded rumors. Which is precisely what Cruz and Gohmert did with their letter.

While it’s true that Sanger was a believer in eugenics, she wasn’t alone in her thinking. Many leaders of her time, including Winston Churchill, felt the same. Cruz has consistently said that his first act as president would be to put a bust of Churchill in the Oval Office and, as Right Wing Watch points out, “The Obama administration’s decision not to hold onto a Churchill bust that the British government had temporarily loaned to George W. Bush has become a frequent point of attack from the Right, despite the fact that there is another Churchill bust still in the White House residence.”

Being the anti-fact bigots they are, Cruz and Gohmert insist that Sanger’s “racist views have had a very real and devastating impact on the widespread destruction of unborn human life — especially in minority communities.”

Stay tuned for more lunacy from the GOP.
