Newspaper Asks Ridiculous Question About Diamonds – The Internet Answers Back Appropriately

Diamonds

Newspaper owned by super rich people asks why the little people aren’t buying more gems.

The Economist, a weekly newspaper owned by the Economist Group and a staple news source since 1843, asked a question the other day that should force it to change its name and the internet attacked.

While the newspaper claims that it “is not a chronicle of economics,” the name would imply that its focus is on the economy and economic trends. One would, at the very least, be led to believe that it keeps an ear to the ground when it comes to economic trends; so it was a bit of a surprise that they ran a piece with the headline, “Shine on: the diamond industry,” that speculates the reason why younger people aren’t buying diamonds. While the article itself explores the moral implications of purchasing diamonds, writing, “Young consumers increasingly shun the taint of conflict and exploitation, and middlemen have been hit as banks balk at gemstones’ untraceability,” the accompanying tweet was substantially more vague.

Anyone see the problem here? Maybe something along the lines of “Are diamonds too dirty for millennials,” would have played better, but “The Economist” went with something that left them wide open to the abuse that can be expected when you ask the internet a stupid question.

We need to know. It’s important.

Questions need to be answered.

And then the responses started to come in.

Some fairly brief.

Others were a bit more detailed.

And then there’s pointing out the obvious.

Some questions about the state of and the history of the economy.

And even some suggestions for future research and articles.

A quick look at who owns the paper might shed some light on how that tweet didn’t raise any eyebrows in the news room. As previously mentioned, the publication belongs to The Economist Group. It is 50% owned by the British branch of the Rothschild family and by the Agnelli family through its holding company Exor.
