Barack Obama: “I’m pretty tired of some folks trash-talking our troops.”
Boom. President Barack Obama’s had quite enough of Donald Trump waving the flag while trash-talking our military.
No wonder Barack Obama’s so disgusted. Here are just a few of the most outrageous examples. The GOP’s White House hopeful has called us “weak and ineffective” on terrorism, because we don’t torture enough. He has declared our military to be “a disaster.” He has accused US troops of stealing cash in Iraq. He called John Allen, a four-star general who retired to care for his ailing wife, “a failed general.”
But when Donald Trump attacked Khizr and Ghazala Khan, claiming Ghazala’s silence meant she was forbidden to speak, he went far beyond the pale. Khizr Khan spoke of his son’s ultimate sacrifice at the Democratic National Convention as his wife Ghazala stood silently beside him. For saving the lives of the men under his command by intercepting a truck full of explosives, Humayun Khan earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.
Barack Obama: “Our Gold Star families represent the very best of our country.”
During Barack Obama’s address at the Disabled Veterans of America Conference in Atlanta, GA on Monday, he let Donald Trump have it with both barrels. But unlike some people, Barack Obama’s a class act and never once mentioned Donald Trump’s name.
“As commander in chief, I’m pretty tired of some folks trash talking America’s military and troops.”
He then went on to explain that our military is smaller these days because we ended two wars, not because America needs to be made “great” again.
Our military is somewhat smaller after two major ground wars come to a close, that’s natural. […] But let’s get some facts straight: America’s Army is the best trained, best-equipped land force on the planet. Our Navy is the largest and most lethal in the world. The precision of and reach of our Air Force is unmatched. Our Marines are the world’s only truly expeditionary force. We have the world’s finest Coast Guard. We have the most capable fighting force in history and we are going to keep it that way.
Barack Obama: Gold Star families “represent the very best of our country.”
Barack Obama adds that Gold Star families like the Khans deserve to be honored, not slimed with glib insults.
I understood that our Gold Star families have made the sacrifice that most of us cannot even begin to imagine. They represent the very best of our country. They continue to inspire us every day, every moment. They serve as a powerful reminder of the true strength of America. And we have to do everything we can for those families. And honor them. And be humbled by them.
