Lifelong Republican and former Secretary of State Colin Powell has some strong, unfavorable opinions about Donald Trump.
Hackers leaked an email exchange between Powell and an aide which revealed that the retired 4-star general referred to the GOP presidential candidate, Donald Trump, as a “national disgrace” and “international pariah.”
Powell confirmed the authenticity of the email exchange to NBC News and said, “The hackers have a lot more.”
Buzzfeed broke the story and announced the emails were obtained by DCLeaks.com – a website rumored to have ties with Russian intelligence services.
The email, dated June 17, also revealed that Powell wrote Trump was “in the process of destroying himself, no need for Dems to attack him.”
In a subsequent email to the same aide on August 21, Powell, who endorsed President Obama twice, blasted Trump for encouraging the “racist” “birther” movement – which is the discredited rumor that Obama is not an American citizen.
“Yup, the whole birther movement was racist,” Powell wrote, “That’s what the 99% believe. When Trump couldn’t keep that up he said he also wanted to see if the certificate noted that he was a Muslim.”
There has been no response from the Trump campaign.
