Right Wing Outrage Over Allegations That Costco Is Embracing Sharia Law

Costco - It's a little overwhelming

Costco is not forcing its female employees to wear burqas; nor is the discount chain advocating death to those women who dishonor their families by being raped. No, what Costco has done is far worse.

Update: A previous version of this article cited American New X rather than American News.

According to our brethren on the right, Costco, a business that pays its employees well while offering attractive prices to the consumer has committed the ultimate sin: selling chicken breasts that are “certified Halal.” Oh, the horror!

While perusing my Facebook feed, I came across this 2015 article from American News. From the headline, one would think that Costco has gone all in with ISIS. Then people repost it, causing their friends to believe the fiction as fact and so it goes.

This isn’t new. As a matter of fact, if one does an internet search for Costco and Sharia Law, a basketful of right wing sites dating back several years pop up with a variation of the same theme: Sharia Law is literally being shoved down our unsuspecting throats.

Several of the articles have a picture of man in a turban standing in front of the offending chicken breasts in the refrigerated aisle. The man is a Sikh, not a Muslim, but little details like that escape the fevered brains of right wing True Believers. Turban = raghead = terrorist.

If you bring up kosher foods being labeled, they’re ready for you. The difference is outlined in no uncertain terms and the charge is clear: IDOL WORSHIP!

From the Paul Holt Ministries (year of publication uncertain):

Unlike kosher food, where the physical processing of the meat is the focus, for Islam it is the spiritual component that makes the meat lawful.

For lawful (halal) meat in Islam, the animal must be killed while the butcher faces Mecca, and either the butcher cries “Allah Akbar” or a tape plays the words over a loud speaker. Understand, that when they face Mecca, they face the black stone the very definition of idol worship.

As for the black stone, I guess the good minister doesn’t view kneeling before an image of Christ on the cross in quite the same way.

If there is any doubt about why we are looking at a possible Trump presidency, this kind of bullsh*t is the reason.
