Email Reveals Republican Scheme To Use Voter Suppression To Rig Elections

Emails confirm what we already know – Republicans are scheming to suppress votes by Democrats.

There are a lot of ways to rig an election, and voter suppression is one of them. In addition to using voter ID laws to limit access to voting, emails between North Carolina Republican Party officials revealed a well-planned scheme to suppress Democratic voters by eliminating early voting locations in their neighborhoods.

According to the Huffington Post:

Exhibit A is North Carolina, where in recent months reporters discovered that state Republican leaders had sent emails directing GOP appointees on local elections boards to “make party line changes” to limit early voting.

In one message, titled “CRITICAL and CONFIDENTIAL,” a Republican district chairman urged election officials to offer only one early voting site for the minimum hours allowed by law, so as not to give Democrats an advantage.

One of the targeted areas is Guilford County, which had 16 polling locations in 2012, and voted for President Obama by a 58 percent margin in 2012. In 2016, those polling locations have been reduced to 1.

Similar tactics are being used in other states controlled by Republicans, including Florida, Wisconsin, Ohio, and, Alabama, Arizona, Indiana, Kansas, Mississippi, Nebraska, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.

A flood of voter suppression laws rolled across the country in 2012, when Republicans gained control of more state legislatures than they’d had in decades. And they used their new-found power to change voting laws, so future elections could be unfairly slanted in their favor.

When a pattern of voter suppression laws dominated Republican-controlled states, the Brennan Center’s Democracy Program Deputy Director, Lawrence Norden told Frontine:

This is almost unprecedented. We have not seen this number of restrictive voting laws pass probably since the end of the 20th century. Certainly, this is the biggest rollback since the civil-rights era in terms of voting rights.

When GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump claims that the US elections are rigged, he’s simply wrong about the methods. When you take into consideration how hard Republicans have worked over the past few years to make it much harder for non-Republican leaning Americans to vote, election rigging becomes all too real.
