Trump is not draining the swamp as promised – he’s topping it off with toxic slime.
It only took 3 days for House Speaker Paul Ryan and a long line of corporate lobbyists and Washington insiders to turn President-elect Donald Trump into a chump for the Republican establishment and their anti-working class agenda. Although Trump ran as an outsider, the names he’s been floating to fill key cabinet positions indicate a seismic shift away from his populist campaign trail rhetoric. Trump is not draining the swamp, as promised. He’s topping it off with toxic slime.
With a huge tax cut for the rich already on the table, along with the potential loss of health care for 20 million Americans and the threat of turning Medicare into a privatized voucher scheme looming, it seems like the reality TV star-turned politician is selling out his working class voters in record time.
There are also early signs that Trump may indeed use the presidency for personal enrichment, raising serious conflict of interest issues. This is a huge red flag that should not be ignored by the electorate.
As the Washington Post notes:
Donald Trump’s decision to leave his children in control of his fortune during his presidency was already an unusual and eyebrow-raising setup. And on Friday, it became even more so.
A day after Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen, announced that Trump’s three oldest children –Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric – would control what he labeled a “blind trust” for the president-elect, the Trump campaign announced Friday afternoon that all three would also serve on Trump’s presidential transition team executive committee.
This is where the moral and ethical character of our elected officials becomes more important than ever. Furthermore, how all this is handled may also turn out to be the ultimate test of strength for the US Constitution.
The checks and balances of the system are greatly diminished when one party has complete control of multiple branches of government. This is evident in states where Republicans have been given super-majority control and used that power to implement extreme right-wing policies that have neutered democracy and civil rights, on levels not seen in decades.
With the Republican Party establishment salivating over the power they now have in the White House, it’s hard to imagine GOP-controlled ethics and oversight committees questioning anything a President Trump might do, or be allowed to get away with.
It’s important to remember that Donald Trump is not the only liar in Washington. He is also not the only one who sees his elected office as a vehicle for personal enrichment. Greed, selfishness and integrity are not defined by party. They’re defined by character.
With Donald Trump in the Oval Office, it won’t take long to see who thinks character matters and who doesn’t. And it’s up to the American people to hold them all accountable.
