Anti-Trump Movement Planning State Capital Protests On Electoral College Voting Day

Campus protest march against hate speech

Not everyone is willing to let Donald Trump move into the White House without a fight. The Electoral College has the power to stop Trump, and anti-Trump groups will be making their voices heard at their doorstep.

Save Democracy is among the groups organizing a national effort to stop Electoral College delegates from casting their votes for Donald Trump. The peaceful protests are scheduled at state capitals in all 50 states, on December 19, 2016. They are calling their effort, “The Day To Defend Democracy.”

In an email from organizer Keith Rouda, the group laid out its case.

Yesterday, 10 Electors demanded an intelligence briefing on Russian meddling in the Election. Now, that number has climbed to 40. According to Politico, the Republican National Committee and the Trump campaign are so concerned about the Electoral College vote on Monday, they are even monitoring Electors social media activity.

The anti-Trump organizers also cited a letter sent to the Director of National Intelligence by the Electors, who are deeply concerned over recent reports that the Russian government may have been involved in rigging the election in favor of Trump.

The Constitution envisions the Electoral College as a deliberative body that plays a critical role in our system of government  —  ensuring that the American people elect a president who is constitutionally qualified and fit to serve…

The Electors require to know from the intelligence community whether there are ongoing investigations into ties between Donald Trump, his campaign or associates, and Russian government interference in the election, the scope of those investigations, how far those investigations may have reached, and who was involved in those investigations. We further require a briefing on all investigative findings, as these matters directly impact the core factors in our deliberations of whether Mr. Trump is fit to serve as President of the United States.

In addition to being seen as a threat to our democracy, the Trump campaign may also be in violation of federal law with a report of threats against Electors who want to vote their conscience.

The Save Democracy organizers believe their efforts will also send an important message to the world.

The protests at every state capitol on Dec 19 will stiffen Democratic resolve to fight. And by drawing attention to the Russian election tampering and Trump losing the popular vote by over 2.8 million, Republican claims of a “mandate” will be seen as a mockery.
