Some might call it ‘great.’ But millions of others find Donald J. Trump’s version of a great America nothing short of a disaster mired in corruption. What’s at stake? In a word, everything.
The corpulent billionaire about to overflow the chair in the Oval Office has had some time to signal how he will actually govern come January 20, 2017. His cabinet picks are a veritable cacophony of corporate crooks, industrial polluters, and Wall Street insiders — hardly a draining of the swamp, as promised on the campaign trail.
This steaming pile of betrayal was noted on CounterPunch:
…the nominees for his administration reflect insincerity in attempting to meaningfully purge the wealthy and corporate influences that have rendered Washington DC dysfunctional.
Trump’s motives for such a cabinet must be for personal financial gain in some form or another, because there is no other logical explanation for installing administrators who have historically despised the agencies they’ve been tapped to head.
So what happens next?
Deregulation is a word Republicans have sold as a benign and benevolent action. It helps create jobs, they say. It’s good for everyone, they say. But they are lying. And history proves that, as the Huffington Post points out.
The terrible Gulf oil spill, West Virginia mining, Wall Street finance and government debt disasters all demonstrate the ongoing catastrophic and continuing results of conservative policies. Each of these is a direct consequence of letting corporate conservatives take over government and dismantle the regulatory and democratic protections that We, the People fought so hard for following the Great Depression — itself a previous demonstration of the failure of conservative policies.
Regulations were created for a reason; they protect people from bad corporate behavior. However, Donald Trump wants to take America backward, and the repercussions will not be easily diverted by a fact-free tweet.
Imagine gutting food safety regulations, and erasing clean air and water pollution rules. How about workplace safety and overtime pay? Do you really need those seat belts in your car, or fuel economy standards? And while you’re at it, think about what happened when bankers were allowed to run Wall Street without rules to block selling bad mortgages. Believe it or not, all those things are part of Trump’s proposals to ‘make America great.’
Furthermore, what Trump does in America will not stay in America. The toxic, human-made air pollution that circles the globe is changing the climate on our planet. Scientists believe that if toxic emissions are not curbed immediately, the results will be catastrophic. NASA and the global scientific community have decades of data to back that up.
While Trump and his science-denying Republican buddies don’t believe a word of it, the Pentagon considers climate change a national security issue, as noted in a Department of Defense statement.
Global climate change will aggravate problems such as poverty, social tensions, environmental degradation, ineffectual leadership and weak political institutions that threaten stability in a number of countries, according to a report the Defense Department sent to Congress…
There are countless ways Donald Trump can create unnecessary threats that can literally change the world. However, much of what he is proposing does not appear to benefit the world.
When it comes to conflicts of interest, Trump and his empire of real estate endeavors and deliberately concealed debts is like no other leader in the free world. The Hill reports that Trump owes, “Chinese banks as well as Russian oligarchs” millions of dollars. Does that make him an easy target for foreign policy blackmail? Clearly. Which is why he could be impeached the day he takes the oath of office.
A recent CIA report suggests that Russian government hackers deliberately meddled in the 2016 presidential race to help Trump win. Former Republican congressman Joe Walsh tweeted that ignoring that would be “tantamount to treason.”
Despite Russian efforts to influence the outcome of our election, voter suppression schemes, and evidence that some voting machines were tampered with, Democrat Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by more than 2.8 million votes. That matters to a lot of people. Donald Trump is not among them. And herein lies the real problem. A myopic, narcissistic, compulsive liar, whose campaign was littered with racism, demagoguery, and unfounded conspiracy theories, belongs in a maximum security prison, not the Oval Office.
Award winning filmmaker Michael Moore rightly predicted Trump’s victory. He also believes that the bloated, disgrace to humanity will not be in the White House for very long, because a lot can happen to trip him up.
Like most bullies with too much money, Trump may think he’s invincible; but he is not impervious. In politics, it’s easy to make enemies; and Trump seems to be making more of those every day, both inside and outside Washington.
