When Trump puts his hand on the Bible to take the oath of office, no one should be surprised if it bursts into flames.
Rather than upholding the U.S. Constitution, America’s obese reality TV star-turned politician already looks like an outright threat to the right to free speech with a ban on the Women’s March on Washington.
Salon was quick to point out how the Trump team was attempting to manipulate the protesters.
The National Park Service, on behalf of the Presidential Inauguration Committee, filed a “massive omnibus blocking permit” securing much of the National Mall, Pennsylvania Avenue, the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial for Trump’s inauguration festivities, The Guardian reported on Thursday. “None of these spots will be open for protesters,” the newspaper reported.
According to the Washington Post, organizers suspect it was a scheme by Trump to disrupt the protest and create confusion; perhaps the only thing the corpulent orange man is good at.
Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, a lawyer and executive director of the nonprofit Partnership for Civil Justice Fund who is representing the ANSWER Coalition, said she thinks the inauguration committee is intentionally holding on to its permits for so long to confuse protesters and prevent them from organizing. She held a news conference Wednesday saying that the National Park Service and the committee are acting unconstitutionally in this permitting process.
“This is an extraordinary land grab,” Verheyden-Hilliard said in an interview. “It’s having, I think, the intended stifling effect. It’s having a distinctive negative on people’s ability to organize.”
After the news broke on Friday, @womansmarch tweeted,
Many of you have asked questions about permits for the march, and we can reassure that our permits will be fine. https://t.co/i9FiXXUF9n

But the tweet wasn’t enough to satisfy some determined women.

The idea that Trump might be attempting to attack the First Amendment on his inauguration day, turns all fears of his authoritarian takeover into an unimaginable reality.
However, fear of an outright uprising may be the key to controlling the Twitter troll-in-chief.
As news of Trump’s threat against the right to protest began to spread, something amazing happened. Just a few hours later, the permit was issued.

When Americans went to their voting booths on November 8th, it’s safe to say that none of them thought a vote for Trump was a vote for attacks on their fundamental rights as Americans. However, it looks like that’s what they got.
Only time will tell if Trump can get away with this, or any other attempt to overrule our constitutional rights. The question is, what happens if he does? Like all fascist bullies, once they get a taste of power, they don’t stop at one bite.
