To Be Clear, The Main Assault On Planned Parenthood Was DEBUNKED Over A Year Ago

In 2015, The New England Journal of Medicine debunked a smear campaign by the anti-abortion group Center for Medical Progress — a campaign meant to spread falsehoods about Planned Parenthood’s practices of disposing aborted fetal tissue.

Paul Ryan recently told reporters that the House will vote to defund Planned Parenthood in the same bill it will use to repeal Obamacare/The Affordable Care Act.

Republicans have been on a crusade to defund Planned Parenthood for years, because the organization provides abortion care. It doesn’t matter to misogynist Republicans that abortions represent 3 percent of total services provided by Planned Parenthood and that NO FEDERAL TAX DOLLARS are spent on abortion. In fact, the Hyde Amendment specifically prohibits tax dollars from being used to fund abortion.

In 2015, Republicans voted on a bill that would prevent Planned Parenthood from receiving $500 million in federal funding, but they were blocked by Democrats. Now, with a Republican-controlled House, all they need is a GOP majority to pass the bill.

Also in 2015, The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) debunked a misinformation campaign by the anti-abortion group Center for Medical Progress (CMP). A series of deceptively edited videos regarding PP’s disposal of aborted fetal tissue were circulated by CMP for the sole purpose of making Planned Parenthood look bad.

  • The inquiries revealed no law broken by Planned Parenthood.
  • Virtually every person in this country has benefited from research using fetal tissue.
  • This attack represents a betrayal of the people who’s lives could be saved by the research and a violation of the most fundamental duty of medicine.

In September 2015, NEMJ also released Planned Parenthood at Risk, which said in part:

“Planned Parenthood is under attack — again. This time, a campaign of misinformation about the retrieval of fetal tissue used in research and therapy is the excuse. When women have made the decision to terminate a pregnancy, Planned Parenthood allows them the opportunity to have the fetal tissue that would otherwise be discarded be used by qualified researchers to help answer important medical questions. The organization does so carefully, following all applicable laws and ethical guidelines. In a Perspective article now published in the Journal, Charo presents compelling arguments defending these uses of fetal tissue. Planned Parenthood, its physicians, and the researchers who do this work should be praised, not damned. The research is not easy to do, but as Charo explains, it has benefited millions of people worldwide. If the anti-choice forces were allowed to rule the day, these advances would never have been made.”

NEJM went on to say:

“It is shameful that a radical anti-choice group whose goal is the destruction of Planned Parenthood continues to twist the facts to achieve its ends. We thank the women who made the choice to help improve the human condition through their tissue donation; we applaud the people who make this work possible and those who use these materials to advance human health. We are outraged by those who debase these women, this work, and Planned Parenthood by distorting the facts for political ends.”

So let’s be crystal clear, the Republican obsession to defund Planned Parenthood is about controlling women and now that the GOP has a congressional majority, the health organization is more vulnerable than it has ever been.
