Reporter Who Took Down Nixon Says Trump Is ‘More Treacherous’

Watergate journalist Carl Bernstein issues a stern warning to Americans about Trump’s “unhinged conduct.”

Legendary investigative journalist Carl Bernstein, who along with Bob Woodward is known for breaking the 1970s Watergate scandal which led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon, took to his Twitter account on Saturday, apparently responding to Trump’s latest attack on the media in the form of a Friday night tweet claiming that “The FAKE NEWS media… is the enemy of the American People!”

Trump’s tweet, as The Independent reports, “followed a chaotic press conference in which Trump called the assembled journalists dishonest, accused a Jewish reporter of lying and ordered him to sit down, and told a black reporter asking about the Congressional Black Caucus: ‘Are they friends of yours?  Set up a meeting.'”

Bernstein responded by tweeting that Trump’s attacks on the media are “more treacherous than Nixon’s.”

“The most dangerous ‘enemy of the people’ is presidential lying–always. Attacks on press by @realDonaldTrump more treacherous than Nixon’s,” he wrote.

A few minutes later he added: “Real news (not fake) is that @realDonaldTrump trying to make conduct of press the issue instead of egregious (and unhinged)conduct of POTUS.”

Bernstein has been a frequent critic of Trump. Last September he told CNN’s Brian Stelter that that he was concerned with the lack of adequate coverage of “Trump’s life and record.”

“He’s a con man,” Bernstein added. “It’s been established. And also, he has presided over a cover up of his own life. And we have allowed it in cable news and network news particularly.”

More recently, Bernstein confirmed our worst fears – that even Republicans “are doubting Trump’s stability” during an interview with CNN’s Don Lemon in late January.
