Disgusting, cruel, and desperate are only a few of the words that can be used to describe the latest Republican plan to replace Obamacare.
The so-called compromise deal Republicans have recently brought to the table promises to be a disaster for the poor, the sick, and anyone with serious health issues, like cancer.
This attack on Obamacare cements Republicans’ position that access to healthcare is not a right, but a privilege that only the affluent should have. And, to further rub salt in that wound, there have only been subtle efforts to hide the fact that this has never been about making Americans healthier. It’s about repealing the taxes on the rich that Obamacare imposed.
As the New York Times explains,
Two of the biggest tax cuts in Republican proposals to repeal the Affordable Care Act would deliver roughly $144 billion over the coming decade to those with incomes of $1 million or more, according to a congressional analysis.
“Repeal-and-replace is a gigantic transfer of wealth from the lowest-income Americans to the highest-income Americans,” said Edward D. Kleinbard, a professor at the University of Southern California law school and former chief of staff for the Joint Committee on Taxation.
The Washington Post reports even more bad news on the latest Republican efforts to turn Medicare spending into a tax cut for millionaires and billionaires.
Judging by a new study… it is even crueler than the last GOP plan… premiums would likely soar for the sick, probably pushing them off coverage.
One of the accounting “tricks” in the new GOP plan would allow states to opt-out of the community rating system. That means insurance companies would be able to charge premium “penalties” to people with pre-existing conditions and give cover to politicians, who can then claim they’ve preserved a popular part of Obamacare.
Center for American Progress health policy analyst, Topher Spiro, told the Washington Post,
The premium markups would be unimaginable, adding thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars to premiums. They would be priced out of the market and quarantined into high-risk pools.
Matt Fuller and Jonathan Cohn at the Huffington Post further explain the real horrors of this punitive healthcare overhaul.
The reality, however, is that insurers would be able to effectively deny coverage by pricing sick people out of the market.
Larry Levitt, senior vice president at the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation said, This effectively allows states to eliminate the ACA’s guarantee of access to insurance at a reasonable price for people with pre-existing conditions, in the interest of lowering premiums for people who are healthy.
No matter how you look at it, TrumpCare is a far cry from the campaign trail promises of the Liar-in-Chief. There is nothing about taking healthcare away from millions of people that will make America “great.”
