Remember that old saying: You don’t sh*t where you eat? Someone should tell that to Trump and his sycophants in Congress.
Just like an ostrich hiding its head in the sand doesn’t make it invisible, not “believing” in climate change doesn’t make it any less real.
Ten thousand years ago, the carbon levels on Earth were 280 parts per million and the levels stayed that way until the start of the Industrial Revolution. That’s when humans began pouring carbon into the atmosphere as a byproduct of industry. There were a lot less people and a lot less machines and a lot less fossil fuels being burned, but as the population increased and technology gave us new and better ways to heat our homes, manufacture goods and transport ourselves, carbon levels began to rise. By 1960, carbon levels had risen to 300 ppm. According to an article in the Scientific American, that represented a “precipitous” climb. So, to recap, from about 1760 until 1960, carbon levels rose by 20 ppm.
By May of 2013, we were flirting with 400 ppm. By June of last year Antarctica hit 400 ppm. That’s the first time carbon levels have been that high in 4 million years. Yes, you read that correctly 4 MILLION YEARS.
But wait, it gets worse. Preliminary data released On May 5, 2017 by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Earth System Research Laboratory recorded a level of 409.01 ppm at the Mauna Loa Observatory, Hawaii. Figures on the linked page are updated regularly. That figure is up from 405.1 ppm from last year’s observation at the same location.
If 20 ppm in 200 years is precipitous, then 109 ppm in 57 years can only be described as catastrophic. And the levels continue to rise. So do the oceans. So do the temperatures. So does the intensity of storms.
But to Trump and his minions, it matters not. Their greed knows no bounds. They want to drill in our national parks. They are determined to open the pristine arctic waters to drilling. Hell, the ice is almost gone anyway, making it a lot easier! They envision a world where coal is king again and drilling and fracking are the answer to energy independence.
Back in March, Trump made headlines by issuing an executive order that was the first shot at dismantling former President Obama’s Clean Power Plan. The new tax plan envisioned by the GOP will most likely trim or eliminate renewable energy tax credits. And of, course, there is EPA chief Scott Pruitt, former Oklahoma Attorney General, whose favorite pastime while in that position was suing the EPA for making thing too rough on the fossil fuel industry.
Trump and his band of heartless, soulless purveyors of greed don’t “believe” in climate change, or if they do, they must believe they and their families are immune to the effects of climate change. Personally, I would be happy if they all choked on the lousy air and water, but sadly, it will be a shared fate.
Planet Earth is our only home. As one of the signs at the recent Peoples’ Climate March proclaimed: There is no Planet B.
