Trump’s questionable pick to head the Department of Education was booed during her speech at Florida’s Bethune-Cookman University on Wednesday.
Students at the historically black school tried to block DeVos’ visit by gathering thousands of signatures on petitions. However, their efforts were not enough to keep DeVos away.
According to the Washington Post, “The speech was part of the Trump administration’s ongoing effort to reach out to historically black colleges and universities. Many students and alumni had objected to having DeVos as speaker in part because they said that outreach is an empty gesture.”
In addition to the boos, some students turned their back on DeVos while she was speaking.
Back in February, DeVos was criticized for comparing black schools “founded during an era of racial segregation — to “school choice” policies,” according to Politico.
Betsy DeVos, a billionaire whose fortune came from marrying into Amway corporation, is a staunch supporter of diverting taxpayer dollars to charter schools through voucher programs. Her efforts to promote corporate-run schools led to disastrous results in Michigan, where she defunded and destabilized the public school systems. The Michigan students hurt most by DeVos’ charter school voucher programs were people of color and those in low-income neighborhoods.
After a lifetime devoted to using misleading spin that supports school segregation, it’s no wonder the students at Bethune-Cookman University booed her off the stage.
