Trump Budget Legalizes Wild Horse Slaughter For Food

Putting money ahead of our moral standards is fast becoming the national disgrace that is synonymous with the name Donald Trump.

For decades, America’s wild horses held a place of honor as proud icons the nation’s pioneering history. But Donald Trump sees them as products to be exploited for profit. And that includes selling them for food to countries known for their inhumane slaughter practices.

Selling America’s wild horses for food is part of a bigger Republican plan to use domestic program spending cuts to fund massive corporate tax cuts, and elimination of the inheritance tax for wealthy families, like Trump’s.

According to the Reno Gazette-Journal,

Trump’s budget anticipates the $10 million savings would come through a reduction in the cost of containing and feeding the animals. The savings also would include cutbacks involving roundups and contraception programs.

The 1971 Free-Roaming Wild Horse and Burro Act permits the sale of older, unadoptable animals. But for years, Congress has approved budget language specifically outlawing the sale of any wild horses for slaughter.

NBC News suggests,

Trump administration is kowtowing to livestock interests who don’t want the region’s estimated 59,000 mustangs competing for precious forage across more than 40,000 square miles of rangeland in 10 states managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

Regardless of the rhetoric and excuses, there is more than the lives of innocent animals at stake here. Horse slaughterhouses are notorious for the unspeakable cruelty these proud animals are forced to endure as they’re killed and processed for food.

ASPCA president and CEO, Matt Bershadker finds the move highly disturbing. “These innocent horses should not pay the price of bureaucracy and poor land management with their lives. Nor should animal lives ever be seen as a line item in a cost-cutting proposal. America horses deserve better, and we owe them more.”

This is about more than eliminating laws that prevent the sale of wild American horses for food. It represents a cold-hearted approach to who we are as a nation. Putting money ahead of our moral standards is fast becoming the national disgrace that is synonymous with the name Donald Trump.
