In the aftermath of the bombshell of Donald Trump Jr.’s admission of colluding with Russian officials to get dirt on Hillary Clinton (why is he still walking free?), operatives close to the White House have launched a plan to discredit journalists who have been reporting on the events.
From the Washington Post:
A handful of Republican operatives close to the White House are scrambling to Trump Jr.’s defense and have begun what could be an extensive campaign to try to discredit some of the journalists who have been reporting on the matter.
Their plan, as one member of the team described it, is to research the reporters’ previous work, in some cases going back years, and to exploit any mistakes or perceived biases. They intend to demand corrections, trumpet errors on social media and feed them to conservative outlets, such as Fox News.
This is right out of the Putin playbook. Cast aspersions on those who uncover and report the truth. Muddy the waters and twist the facts until any semblance of truth is gone.
Despite claims to the contrary, the White House is in a state of chaos – the Washington Post aptly called it a “category 5 hurricane” – and the worse things get, the more insane the tweets from Donald Trump are.
Case in point: Donald Trump arguing that Hillary Clinton used Moscow disinformation to use against him to win the election.
Another case in point: Donald Trump tweeting after Juniors’ appearance on Fox News:
Of course, the only reason Junior was “transparent” was because he was caught, so he released the incriminating emails just before the New York Times posted its article outlining the June 2016 meeting between Russian officials, Donald Trump Jr., Paul Manafort and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner.
If it weren’t so disgustingly transparent, it would be funny.
But there’s nothing funny about what is going on in our country – and inside the White House – right now. We have a White House in chaos, a Congress that is using that chaos to obscure the work they are doing to dismantle the gains made in the Obama presidency, and a loud echo chamber on Fox News Noise that puts one in mind of Pravda. Pravda is the Russian word for truth, laughable on its face, but insidious in how it subverts an entire people into believing things that are just not true.
What’s next? Will Trump, like his idol Vladimir Putin, start targeting the lives rather than just the reputations of journalists who report news not to the administration’s liking? This is how to make America great?
The Fourth Estate is our bulwark against the perfidy of people like Trump and the toadies who serve him and who are, in turn, serving the interests of Vladimir Putin rather than those of the American people.
Don’t believe the bullsh*t. We must keep the lights on and shine them brightly on the activities of those who value personal gain over all else – including the survival of our once great, but now deeply troubled nation. We stopped being great the day Donald J. Trump was inaugurated, and we will not be great again until he and all those who serve him, are gone from office.
As the banner across the Washington Post states: Democracy Dies in Darkness.
