White House Ethics Chief Resigns, Suggests Trump Is Using The Presidency For Profit – Video

The stench of corruption coming from the White House is turning our nation of laws into a putrid swamp.

Walter Shaub, the White House director of the Office of Government Ethics, resigned on Thursday, amid concerns that Trump’s refusal to fully divest from his family businesses gives the appearance that he is using the presidency for personal profit.

In an interview with CBS News following the release of his resignation letter, Shaub suggested that as long as Trump was still tied to his businesses, there was no way to really know whether his decisions as president were truly in the best interests of the American people.

“It almost doesn’t matter whether they are profiting or not, Americans have the right to know what the motivations of its leaders are.”

There was no inference that anyone in the Trump administration was forcing Shaub out, but there have been clashes. NPR reports,

The battle began in late November when the ethics office began issuing a series of tweets that mimicked Trump’s style, exclaiming: “Brilliant! Divestiture is good for you, good for America!”

Despite urging Trump to put his assets into a blind trust, as other presidents have done to avoid the appearance of conflicts of interest, it never happened, Shaub told NRP.

Trump’s trust is “not even halfway blind,” Shaub said at Brookings. “His sons are still running the businesses, and, of course, he knows what he owns.”

Shaub maintained a highly professional tone, despite the inference that he could not in good conscience, continue to work for a White House that clearly does not hold itself to the same high standards as previous presidents.

According to the Washington Post, the White House wasted no time in accepting Shaub’s resignation.

Reacting to Shaub’s resignation, White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said, “The White House accepts Mr. Shaub’s resignation and appreciates his service.” She said the president would nominate a successor “in short order.”

Shaub’s replacement will have to be approved by the Senate, and Democrats are likely to balk at a nominee who would be little more than a rubber stamp for turning the Oval Office into Trump family profiteering headquarters.

The Washington Post further reported,

In a statement, Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) promised that Democrats would closely scrutinize Trump’s selection to replace Shaub, insisting the nominee “must demonstrate that they are committed to actually draining the swamp and ensuring administration officials are not using their positions for personal gain.”

Based on what we’ve seen so far, Trump appointments are more likely to turn their agencies into the antithesis of their intended purpose. If that pattern holds, Democrats in the minority may not be able to do much to curb the stench of corruption coming from the current occupants of the White House.
