Republicans Run For Cover As Mueller Investigation Closes In On Trump
Since America sent a reality TV host to the White House, words like chaos, dishonesty, Russian influence, and failure have become synonymous with the Republican Party. And that is beginning to come with a political price tag Republican elites are afraid of.
While Trump may claim that the only polls that count are the ones that favor him, the rest of the Republican Party is not as blind. With Trump’s numbers falling, cracks are beginning to show in party loyalty – which may explain why Republicans seem to be taking on a different view of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. Rather than going along with Trump’s tweets calling it a ‘witch hunt,’ there are now bipartisan legislative efforts to protect Mueller.
New York Magazine writes,
Signs of the disintegration have popped up everywhere…. And the insurrection appears to be creeping outward… Barring resignation or removal from office… we are stuck with a delegitimized president.
Unless, that is, the Mueller investigation does the dirty work Republican lawmakers don’t have the spine for: getting rid of Trump.
Let’s keep in mind the reason Republicans have been drooling over unified control of the government for decades. They want to implement their inhumane, fascist-conservative agenda that shifts more money and power from We the People to corporations, which are not human beings, no matter what the Supreme Court declares.
A good example of this Republican policy horror story was pointed out by the New York Times.
The basics of Republican health legislation, which haven’t changed much in different iterations of Trumpcare, are easy to describe: Take health insurance away from tens of millions, make it much worse and far more expensive for millions more, and use the money thus saved to cut taxes on the wealthy.
Trump is proving to be too much of a train wreck to get the GOP to their corporatocracy dream, so it should come as no surprise that they are willing to throw their president under the same bus he throws them under, but without all the tweeting.
Robert Mueller gives cowardly anti-democracy Republicans cover. If the special council investigation exposes Trump as a fraud, traitor, and/or criminal, they’ll have an excuse to feed their gullible base for Trump’s presidential demise.
But it’s still a race against the clock. The 2018 mid-term elections are closing in, and vulnerable Republicans are, and should be, very afraid that Democrats will take away the legislative power they never really earned in the first place, unless you believe that gerrymandering and voter suppression is a sound basis for democracy.
