Rahm Emanuel, President Obama’s former chief of staff, takes the concept of “Sanctuary Cities” to the next level.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) is no fan of the president — especially after Trump criticized Chicago for its violent crimes — and on Tuesday, Emanuel held a press conference declaring the Windy City will continue to welcome DREAMers despite the decision to terminate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
Emanuel said, “To all the Dreamers that are here in this room, and in the city of Chicago, you are welcomed in the city of Chicago. This is your home and you have nothing to worry about.”
He went on to say:
“So, to all those who are part of what are referred to as DACA, or ‘Dreamers’, you will always be ‘Dreamers’ in the eyes of the city of Chicago because you have big dreams and we want to be a part of those dreams.”
Mayor Emanuel boasted about the Chicago’s community college program, which allows high school students who maintain a B-average to attend community college for free, and he added that program is “open to dreamers.”
Just hours after Emanuel’s press conference, Trump tweeted:
Congress now has 6 months to legalize DACA (something the Obama Administration was unable to do). If they can’t, I will revisit this issue!
Emanuel served as President Obama’s White House chief of staff for a year and a half; and in October 2010, Emanuel resigned as chief of staff to run as a candidate in Chicago’s 2011 mayoral election. Obama created the DACA program in 2012.
