Koch Brothers Shut Down GOP ‘Piggy Bank’ Over Obamacare Repeal Failure

Republican Donors Tie Obamacare Repeal To 2018 Midterm Money

Republicans seem to think that they can’t win enough of their gerrymandered seats in the 2018 midterms unless they take healthcare away from millions of their constituents by repealing Obamacare. But their plan to punish their own voters may backfire.

Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) told Vox, “If we do nothing, it has a tremendous impact on the 2018 elections, and whether or not Republicans still maintain control and we have the gavel.”

What Roberts and the rest of his GOP friends are failing to admit is that there is a whole lot in between stripping healthcare from millions and doing ‘nothing.’ It’s called governing for the good of the many, not pandering to the few.

Every Republican version of healthcare reform is virtually the same as the other. They all punish the poor with Medicaid block grants that states will use to cherry pick recipients and throw the rest under the bus. They all use the excuse of ‘state’s rights’ to open the door to bringing back financial penalties for pre-existing conditions. And just for fun, they also want people to know that their health insurance will be cheaper because they’ll be able to buy junk policies that cover almost nothing. In other words, they want to make the healthcare system even worse than it was before Obamacare.

The real problem is that Republican donors see control of all three elected branches of government as the legislative free-for-all they’ve been trying to buy for years. And, now that they have it, they want a return on their ‘investment.’ That means all sorts of corporate deregulation for Big Polluters, bankers, Wall Street gamblers, and anyone who profits from stripping consumers of their rights. The Big Donor class also wants their tax bills reduced to virtually nothing. In order to achieve that without blowing up the deficit beyond repair and immediately crashing the global economy, they have to ‘starve’ as much of the federal government as they can get away with.

One need not look any further than a June 26 article in The Guardian for evidence that Obamacare repeal has nothing to do with giving anyone access to healthcare.

At a weekend donor retreat attended by at least 18 elected officials, the Koch brothers warned that time is running out to push their agenda, most notably healthcare and tax reform, through Congress.

One Texas-based donor warned Republican lawmakers that his “Dallas piggy bank” was now closed, until he saw legislative progress. “Get Obamacare repealed and replaced, get tax reform passed,” said Doug Deason. “Get it done and we’ll open it back up.”

With all the dark money rolling through campaign coffers, democracy is hanging on for dear life. The greedy and power-hungry have no moral standards. If they did, they wouldn’t be trying to enrich themselves through cruelty to humanity.
