Trump Is Helping His Fellow Republicans Sell The Lies On Obamacare Repeal

Donald Trump

Trump is selling out his base and everyone else on Obamacare repeal. Again.

Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday to drum up support for the latest version of Obamacare repeal with the Graham-Cassidy bill. But the bill doesn’t do what Trump claims it does when it comes to pre-existing conditions.

The problem with Trump’s claim is that it’s not true. Under Graham-Cassidy, it would be up to individual states to decide how they want to run their healthcare systems. And, while there is a provision that requires them to offer insurance to those with pre-existing conditions, there is nothing to stop them from allowing insurance companies to charge much higher premiums for that coverage.

As Axios notes, “Graham-Cassidy doesn’t let states waive the part of the Affordable Care Act that says insurers have to cover sick people. But it does allow states to opt out of several other ACA rules that can cause people with pre-existing conditions to pay more for their health care.”

If passed, Graham-Cassidy would hit Trump’s low income base hard, along with everyone else who could be priced out of the market. That’s because the language of the bill is vague and open to interpretation. While it states that coverage should be ‘affordable,’ there are no specific guidelines to define what that means.

Phillip Bump put it this way in the Washington Post; “Those with preexisting conditions are being asked to trust that the language in the bill will mean that the costs of their insurance — insurance that is often critical to their quality of life — will remain within reach. That’s a significant leap of faith.”

That is an epic understatement considering how little ‘faith’ most Americans have in the ability of Congress to look out for the best interests of We the People.
