Google Finds Evidence Of Russian Election Meddling In Gmail, YouTube, Ads, And Search Results

Google is now reporting that Russian operatives used their platforms to influence the outcome of the election.

Based on new evidence, Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. elections was not limited to Twitter and Facebook. Google is now reporting that Russian operatives used their platforms to influence the outcome of the election.

According to the Washington Post,

The Silicon Valley giant has found that tens of thousands of dollars were spent on ads by Russian agents who aimed to spread disinformation across Google’s many products, which include YouTube, as well as advertising associated with Google search, Gmail, and the company’s DoubleClick ad network… The discovery by Google is also significant because the ads do not appear to be from the same Kremlin-affiliated troll farm that bought ads on Facebook — a sign that the Russian effort to spread disinformation online may be a much broader problem than Silicon Valley companies have unearthed so far.

Russian influence on Google involved “tens of thousands of dollars worth of ads” from Russian agents, according to Axios.

This raises even more questions about just how involved the Trump campaign was with Russian operatives and what they expected in return.

Even more alarming is the idea that the propaganda scheme that appears to have been aimed at manipulating minds, may also have targeted some voting machines.

The enormous amount of Russian infiltration now being uncovered is further evidence that Trump’s presidency may be illegitimate. What the United States can do about it at this point is uncharted territory. Impeachment won’t undo the damage Trump has already done to our democracy. And with Republicans in control of a dysfunctional Congress, legislating safeguards against future election meddling isn’t going to happen anytime soon – if ever.
