Leave it to Trump to come up with a healthcare plan with a reputation for ‘fraud.’
Trump remains obsessed with his failure to repeal Obamacare. That has led him to throw in with Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul, who is hoping to get Trump to use an executive order to open up insurance markets to association health plans.
Among the problems with association health plans is their reputation for stripping away consumer rights, ripping off policy holders, and fraud.
CNN Money reports,
These plans have always been controversial. In the past, some had solvency problems and went bankrupt, leaving consumers on the hook with unpaid medical bills.
In several states, regulators investigated whether the plans were advertising that they had comprehensive coverage when, in fact, they provided little or no coverage for such things as chemotherapy or doctor office visits.
“They have history of fraud, of insolvency, of segmenting markets and there is often a loss of consumer protections,” said Kevin Lucia, a research professor at Georgetown’s Health Policy Institute.
Like previous iterations of Republican Obamacare repeal, association health plans would give states more power to allow ‘junk’ policies that offer little or no coverage for commonly needed benefits like maternity care, doctor visits, or cancer treatments, among others.
Of course, none of this comes even close to Trump’s campaign promises to give everyone ‘great’ healthcare coverage. If you’re not surprise by that, you’re not alone.
