Sen. Jeff Flake Caught On Live Mic Calling GOP ‘Toast’ Under Trump

Jeff Flake

Jeff Flake made it clear that he thought Trump was just about the worst thing that ever happened to the Republican Party.

There is no love lost between Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Az.) and Donald Trump. And since Sen. Flake announced that he won’t be seeking re-election, he has shown no fear when it comes to criticizing Trump. What he said about Trump’s effect on the entire Republican Party, on a live mic at an Arizona tax reform event on Friday, is a hard truth other Republicans aren’t as willing to openly admit.

In the video, posted by ABC News, Sen. Flake made it clear that he thought Trump was just about the worst thing that ever happened to the Republican Party.

“If we become the party of Roy Moore and Donald Trump, we are toast,” Flake was caught saying by ABC affiliate KNXV.

Last month, when Sen. Flake announced on the senate floor that he would not seek re-election, he used the opportunity to note Trump’s unfitness for office, without calling him out by name.

“We must never adjust to the present coarseness of our national dialogue with the tone set up at the top… The personal attacks, the threats against principles, freedoms and institution, the flagrant disregard for truth and decency.”

Sen. Flake included the words, “reckless and appalling,” as well as “outrageous, undignified,” and “dangerous,” to describe the current president.

It seems that Sen. Flake is not alone in his assessment of the reality TV host in the White House.

According to CNN,

The three dozen GOP governors gathering here this week for a Republican Governors Association meeting — including some close allies of President Donald Trump — said they were jarred by Democrats’ easy victory in the Virginia governor’s race last week… Backlash against President Donald Trump has led to a spike in Democratic fundraising and energized the party’s base.

Trump’s drag on the GOP, as well as on the rest of the country, wasn’t missed by Rolling Stone, which put together an assessment by mental health professionals – who are confident that Trump has no business being anywhere near the Oval Office – citing serious mental disorders.

Trump is also finding it hard to get much support among the electorate. His poll numbers are horrible, hitting a new low in November with a loud thud.

Yes, Republicans have reason to worry. That means the rest of us have reason to hope.
