Bearing Witness To The Death Of The Republican Party

Watch enough commentary and you will hear someone say that Trump is the Republican Party. It isn’t just an offhand comment, although it’s delivered in a kind of throwaway manner on whatever is the latest horror dealt to us by Trump and his ever more complicit GOP. It’s enough to make a person cry. But there is a silver lining – and it’s a big one.

When people like Lindsey Graham, who had earned a measure of respect (albeit a small one) in liberal quarters, attack the media for saying about Trump the EXACT same things he’s said about the Orange Scourge, then you know the statement that Trump is the Republican Party is more than just a liberal talking point. When the Republican Party lines up behind a pedophile like Roy Moore and gives a nod to convicted criminal Sheriff Joe Arpaio in his Senate bid, you know that Republicans have lost whatever shred of a moral compass they once had. When no one in the GOP stands up in any meaningful way to address the racist proclivities of a president who made false equivalencies in the wake of the white supremacist terrorist attack in Charlottesville, it is as plain as the nose on your face that the Republican Party is in its death throes and nothing and no one, particularly not the likes of Donald Trump or any of the other traitorous clowns in the White House or in Congress, can save it. These are self-inflicted wounds.

The face of the United States of America is changing. It has become younger (millennials now outnumber baby boomers), more brown, more black, more Asian – more everything except old and white. For all of their empty talk about welcoming minorities and caring for the welfare of the working man, everything they’ve done – EVERYTHING – has been aimed at throwing people out of the country, taking away health care, enriching the already obscenely wealthy even more, fouling our air and water, and generally deconstructing all the safeguards put in place to protect people and look after their welfare when they are unable, for a variety of reasons, to care for themselves.

The new face of America is not going to put up with this crap any longer. The people who comprise the new demographics of our nation, along with those of us who have been around for awhile but always on the same page of equality, fairness and concern for our neighbors, are angry and a little bit (maybe a lot) scared; but most of all, we are fired up. So much so that even Republican gerrymandering may not be able to stem the tide of the coming #bluewave. Sure there are deep red states – like Alabama for instance – but when red state people get disgusted and can’t bring themselves to vote for a Democrat, they stay home. When people see their vote means something, that they can actually effect change, they have a tendency to do it. We’ve been shown the way. All we have to do now is get active, stay active and above all else, VOTE.

The Republican Party, with its outdated ideology, is dying right in front of us. They have tied themselves to a small-minded, mean-spirited oaf of a man and there is no turning back for them. This country is ours to lose – or to take back.
