Former Trump Lawyer Calls Trump To Warn Him That Michael Cohen Would Flip

President Donald Trump’s former lawyer, Jay Goldberg, told the conservative-leaning Wall Street Journal that Trump’s current lawyer (and fixer), Michael Cohen, might flip if he’s faced with serious federal criminal charges.

After the FBI raided Cohen’s residences and office earlier this month, a panicked Trump called Goldberg — who was his lawyer in the 1990s and 2000s for divorce and real estate matters — to ask him for legal advice on what he should do about Cohen. Goldberg told WSJ that he told the president that on a scale of 1 to 100 of protecting Trump, Cohen “isn’t even a 1.”

Earlier this month Cohen tweeted: “I will always protect our @POTUS.”

Goldberg, who has experience prosecuting members of the mafia, told the president it is possible that Cohen could be wearing a wire during their conversations, “You have to be alert,” he said he advised Trump. “I don’t care what Michael says.”

It’s not just Goldberg who believes Cohen will flip on Trump; two sources close to the president are saying that people in his inner circle have discussed the possibility of Cohen flipping if he’s hit with serious charges by federal prosecutors for his work on behalf of President Trump.

Trump defender and liberal lawyer Alan Dershowitz recently met with the president and his staff and warned them about Cohen, saying, “That’s what they’ll threaten him with: life imprisonment. They’re going to threaten him with a long prison term and try to turn him into a canary that sings.”

In addition to offering advice about how to proceed with Cohen, Goldberg advised Trump to fire Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, and that he should not agree to an interview with Robert Mueller, “Talking is a certain trap. Don’t ever do it.”

From the Daily Beast:

The materials seized by FBI agents from Cohen’s home, office, safety deposit box, and hotel room include ‘documents relating to communications with the president of the United States covered by the attorney-client privilege,’ Cohen’s lawyer [said to the judge].

Trump’s walls are closing in, and there’s no telling how he’ll react or what he’ll do.
