New Hampshire Sheriff Candidate vows ‘Deadly Force’ to Stop Abortions

Frank Szabo, Liberty Party candidate for Hillsborough Country Sheriff in New Hampshire, has vowed that he will arrest, and if necessary use deadly force, anyone involved in an abortion. When asked about his position on abortion by local news station WMUR-TV he stated:

“I would respond specifically by saying that if someone is under threat, a full-grown human being, if they’re under threat, what should the sheriff do? Everything in their power to prevent them from being harmed. I would hope that it wouldn’t come to that, as with any situation where someone is in danger, but again, specifically talking about elective abortions and late-term abortions, that is an act that needs to be stopped.”

Szabo also told CBS News in a subsequent interview:

“Deadly force is the last thing law enforcement should be using, if a citizen’s life is in danger they should be protected. If there is no other choice, that’s what’s needed to protect the citizen. Why is there a difference between someone who is 20 years old and their life is in danger and someone who is nine months in utero.”

In other follow up interviews, Szabo is standing by his comments as well.  As reported in the Bedford Patch, Szabo stated:

“Just because a law is on the books does not mean that it’s lawful. I talk   about the difference of ‘legal’ and ‘lawful.’ It used to be legal to own slaves,   but that didn’t make it lawful. It used to be legal to restrict someone of   color to the back of bus … Just because a piece of legislation says it’s legal to murder the unborn doesn’t make it lawful.”

When asked about the WMUR interview, Szabo noted that while he had not seen the footage of that interview he was standing by his statements:

“I’ve  seen some chatter going on because of  interview I did this morning  with WMUR … but one comment I’ve seen is Kevin Smith  [GOP gubernatorial candidate] calling for me  to step down because of my belief that the use of deadly force is  appropriate to prevent an abortion. I  don’t think anybody  would have trouble with preventing a full-grown  human being from being  murdered, so why would anyone object to the use of deadly force to  prevent the murder of an unborn human?”

Szabo went on the dismiss criticism from Democrats stating:

“I’m  certainly not surprised at the outcry and again, people are   certainly welcome to your opinion but my understating is  murder is  murder, and honestly, I don’t know if I’ve ever had any  support from  Democrats.”

UPDATE: Aug. 23, 2012 9:52am: Szabo is now retracting his comments and apologizing for them. We would note however, that he stood by his comments throughout the course of multiple on-film interviews and phone interviews for over 24 hours. “I want to be clear to the people of New Hampshire that I made several comments about the use of deadly force against abortion doctors that I regret, that I apologize for, and that I fully retract. In making comments yesterday, I let my passionate stance against abortion get the better of me.”
