Forgetting His Own Tragic Record, Mitt Romney Attacks Obama On Foreign Policy

Mitt Romney - Mesa, Arizona (2012)

Forgetting his own embarrassing record, Mitt Romney unloaded on Obama’s foreign policy legacy during a Tuesday interview.

Former Massachusetts Governor and two-time failed Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney lashed out at President Barack Obama‘s foreign policy record during a Tuesday interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt.

“It’s a sad commentary that the president’s been so ineffective,” Romney said, adding: “I find it troubling and revealing that the world around us is going to hell and the president takes no responsibility.”

After running through a long list of criticisms of the Obama administration’s actions abroad, Romney went so far as to predict that Obama would go down in history as having one of the worst records on national security and foreign policy.

“I just think that on the issue of foreign policy — and [protecting] America and America’s interests, and the interest of freedom secure and strong — the president’s been a disaster,” he said. “I think he may go down in history as one of the very worst foreign policy presidents in American history.”

It seems that Romney has somehow forgotten his own pathetic record regarding foreign policy, not to mention the many successes enjoyed by the Obama administration.

Mitt Romney’s Embarrassing Foreign Policy Adventure Otherwise Known As “National Geogaffe-ic”

Speaking of foreign policy adventures, how many of you remember Romney’s trip to the U.K. during his failed 2012 presidential campaign?

Romney set out on his first trip abroad as a presidential candidate, hoping to show the world his strength as a great statesman. Only one day into his trip, he has 6 major gaffes under his belt.  (The Guardian has been kind enough to rate them from 1-10 for your convenience.)

As reported by CBS News at the time, the British news media has blasted Romney all evening the first day of his trip:

Then, to top it all off, Romney went on to breach international security, by boasting to the media about a secret meeting with the head of Britain’s MI6 intelligence agency, something he clearly should have kept to himself.

I can only say that I appreciated the insights and perspectives of the leaders of the government here and opposition here as well as the head of MI6. [W]e discussed Syria and the hope for a more peaceful future for that country.

When asked for comment, Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office, which handles press for MI6, wouldn’t acknowledge the meeting:

Sir John Sawers meets many people, but we don’t give a running commentary on any of these private meetings.

The British press noted that Romney slipped up in referring to the meeting, suggesting that intelligence-related meetings are usually not discussed publicly.

Jon Stewart went on to mock Mitt Romney’s “Geogaffe-ic” trip overseas in a segment aired shortly after his departure from Britain.  Speaking of Romney’s rocky start in London, Stewart noted that the campaign must be glad to “escape our greatest ally” and move on with the rest of the trip.

Mitt Romney Lost The Foreign Policy Debate To President Obama

President Obama minced no words when it came to ridiculing GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney about foreign policy during the third and final debate held three months later on the 22nd of October of 2012.

The president shredded Romney during an early exchange during the debate, telling him:

Governor Romney, I’m glad that you recognize that Al Qaeda is a threat, because a few months ago when you were asked what’s the biggest geopolitical threat facing America, you said Russia, not Al Qaeda. You said Russia. The 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because, you know, the Cold War’s been over for 20 years.

But Governor, when it comes to our foreign policy, you seem to want to import the foreign policies of the 1980s, just like the social policies of the 1950s and the economic policies of the 1920s.
