Ultra-Conservative Website Demands Immediate Confirmation Of Merrick Garland

Obama-Garland

Ultra-conservative website calls for immediate confirmation of Merrick Garland.

The ultra-conservative website RedState published an article this week entitled: “Republicans Should Confirm Merrick Garland ASAP.”

Garland is President Barack Obama’s nominee for the Supreme Court of the United States – intended to replace Antonin Scalia, who died unexpectedly in February of this year.

Republicans have actively blocked any consideration of Garland’s confirmation claiming that any new appointments to the Supreme Court should lie with the next president, although there is no tangible precedent for such a claim.

Now with Donald Trump all but assured of getting the Republican nomination, RedState – which receives over 5 million page views a month – is calling for Republicans to make the best of the situation and immediately confirm Garland.

“Now that Donald Trump is the presumptive nominee, this is not even a close call. There is absolutely no reason to drag this out any longer,” RedState’s Leon H. Wolf writes. “Garland is not a great choice, but he is not a terrible one, either. And more than anything, he is old (for a modern Supreme Court appointment) and will be up for replacement in probably 10 years instead of 20 or 30.”

Wolf continues with this grim prediction for conservatives: “Republicans must know that there is absolutely no chance that we will win the White House in 2016 now. They must also know that we are likely to lose the Senate as well. So the choices, essentially, are to confirm Garland and have another bite at the apple in a decade, or watch as President Clinton nominates someone who is radically more leftist and 10-15 years younger, and we are in no position to stop it.”

He concludes by writing that “were he the Republicans” his greatest fear would be that “Barack Obama would withdraw Garland’s nomination today. The fact that Merrick Garland still exists as an option right now is a gift that should not be squandered.”
