Republican US House member Michael Burgess of Texas said on Monday that he opposes the abortin of fetuses after 15 weeks of pregnancy since that is the time that male fetuses begin to masturbate.
“This is a subject I do know something about,” Burgess, a former OB/GYN who said he’s delivered “thousands of babies,” began. “There is no question in my mind that a baby at 20-weeks after conception can feel pain.” He has argued that the limit of 20 weeks on Congressman Franks’ bill is “far too late” and believes it should come down to 15 or 16 weeks.
“You watch a sonogram of a 15-week baby, and they have movements that are purposeful,” he continued. “They stroke their face. If they’re a male baby, they may have their hand between their legs. I mean, they feel pleasure, why is it so hard to think that they could feel pain?”
“Sometimes we have to give voice to the voiceless,” Burgess concluded. “And this is one of those times.”

Meanwhile, back in reality Jeanne Conry, President of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, said it was wrong to “base science on single observations.”
“We certainly can see a movement of a fetus during that time, but in terms of any knowledge about pleasure or pain – there are no data to assess. We don’t know enough about the biology and the science.”
She went on to note that:
“For whatever reason in our country when it comes to abortion we make statements based not on the science but based on observations and on emotion.”
