Is Ted Cruz the Zodiac Killer? Social media may have the answer….
The Zodiac Killer is the nickname given to an unidentified serial killer directly linked to at least five murders in northern California in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Four men and three women were believed to have been targeted. The killer himself originated the nickname in an August 7, 1969 letter sent to the press. The letter was one of four cryptograms believed to have been sent by the killer, and to date, only one has ever been definitively deciphered. Several suspects have been named over the years, and the case remains open. However, at this point it is doubtful the case will ever be solved.
Esquire reports that “While it’s technically implausible, a growing number of sleuths, conspiracy theorists, and absurdist comedians online are actively propagating the theory that Ted Cruz is, in fact, the infamous Zodiac Killer.”
Despite the farcical nature of the claim, this being the Internet, it’s something that we must now contend with as a growing chorus of media outlets have all weighed in on the phenomenon. In fact, if you type the words “Is Ted Cruz…” into Google, one of the top results at this point is “the Zodiac Killer?”
According to Esquire, “The first instance of the theory popped up in March of 2013, with a Twitter account called @redpillamerica joking about Cruz’ secret identity.”

The idea lay dormant for the most part until last December when a Facebook page, “Ted Cruz is the Zodiac Killer,” appeared and the Twitter hashtag #ZodiacTed appeared.
One Twitter user, Kill Tim Faust, even commissioned a t-shirt to commemorate the occasion:

“Ted Cruz is a terrifying monster,” according to the description posted on the website selling the shirt.
“You know who else was a monster? The Zodiac Killer, who claimed to have killed 37 people in the Bay Area,” the site states, adding that “Ted Cruz has never denied being the Zodiac Killer. The conclusion is simple—and Ted Cruz has never publicly refuted it.”
The website goes on to offer the following disclaimer: “obviously, this is satire. There’s no way Ted Cruz is the Zodiac killer—the dates don’t match up,” but goes on to warn: “However, there’s no way of knowing whether Ted Cruz has sworn with his every waking breath to further the agenda of the Zodiac Killer, whom he may or may not love.
“Hell, with his record in the Senate, he’s on pace to blow past ZK’s record by many orders of magnitude.”
Below are a few samples of the hilarity that has been erupting on Twitter:
