Rob Reiner says it’s impossible to reason with Trump’s supporters, who exhibit a very serious strain of racism.

Legendary actor, filmmaker, activist, and outspoken Donald Trump critic, Rob Reiner, blasted the Republican nominee in a scathing interview with The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday.

Asked if Archie Bunker would be a Trump supporter if All in the Family was still on the air, Reiner – who played the character known as “Meathead” in the sitcom – answered “Absolutely, 100 percent.”

“Trump is from Queens. Archie is born and raised in Queens. They have the same kind of mentality,” he continued. “Archie was a bigot, and the things that come out of Trump’s mouth are totally bigoted. So yeah, he definitely would be.”

Reiner went on to express doubt at the prospect of reaching out to Trump supporters, citing his belief in Trump’s January claim that he “could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody” and “wouldn’t lose voters.”

“To a degree, that’s true,” Reiner explained. “Look at the demographics: It’s mostly white males who don’t have college degrees. And, you know, that’s Archie. Then there’s also a very serious strain of racism that runs through his followers.”

Continuing, Reiner states that he doesn’t think you can ever “reach those people,” that to him, “It’s very disturbing because a lot of these racist ideas have kind of been dormant for a while, and he’s given voice to them — he’s kind of unearthed it.”

“And the thing that’s most disturbing is to discover that there’s so many people that still hold those views. If it isn’t overt racism, it’s this kind of a desperate attempt at holding on to some version of America that they think was there once. They’re really threatened by our diversity,” he continued.

Reiner concluded his remarks about Trump and his supporters, explaining that the greatest aspect of “the experiment of democracy” is the fact that “it celebrates diversity and diversity is what makes it strong. If at some point America has no clear majority, where there’s such a mix of ethnicities and races and religions, and it can work as a democracy, that is the ultimate beacon to the rest of the world of how we should all live.”
