New York Police Department officials have confirmed that all nine bystanders shot during the Empire State Building tragedy last Friday were struck by bullets fired by two police officers – Officer Craig Matthews who shot seven times and Officer Robert Sinishtaj who fired nine times. It was reported that neither officer had fired his weapon in the line of duty prior to the incident.
Initially, it wasn’t clear whether the gunman, Jeffrey Johnson, was responsible for the wounded civilians but based upon ballistics “it appears that all nine of the victims were struck either by fragments or by bullets fired by police,” Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told reporters on Saturday at a community event in Harlem as reported by NBC news.
