Fox News falsely accuses Obama of wanting to change the Constitution with host Steve Doocy misrepresented Pres. Obama’s proposal to avoid the chance of a federal government default on its financial obligations.
Doocey interviewed Republican Senator John Thune on the December 7 edition of Fox and Friends and stated that he thought a fight between Pres. Obama and congressional Republicans would be “good news for the Republicans” because they would “obviously have the upper hand on that.”
Thune responded that “what we’re told is the president is even thinking about what he might be able to do to raise the debt ceiling without going through Congress, which would be a huge mistake and ought to be unconstitutional.”
Doocy replied: “He just wants to change the Constitution.”
In fact, Obama has proposed legislation that would amend current statutes that put a limit on federal government’s borrowing rather than to amend the Constitution or to change the way in which it is interpreted. Indeed, the Obama administration has never proposed any change to the Constitution and has actually specifically rejected a novel interpretation of the Constitution that would allow the president to ignore the debt ceiling in order to avoid government default.
