Speaking at a Tea Party event in North Richland Hills, Texas, earlier this week, Gov. Rick Perry indicated his support for allowing school officials to carry concealed handguns. His comments were in response to last Friday’s school house shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.
Noting that local school districts should be free to decide their own policies regarding firearms, Perry stated “In the state of Texas, if you go through the process, have been trained, and you are a handgun-licensed individual, you should be able to carry a gun anywhere in the state.”
Several school districts in Texas already allow school officials to carry firearms, and Gov. Perry has directed Texas school districts to review their emergency operation plans in light of the shooting in Newtown which left 20 children dead.
Gov. Perry went on to express his support for continued gun rights stating, “One of the things that I hope we don’t see from our federal government is this knee-jerk reaction from Washington, D.C., when there is an event that occurs, that they come in and they think they know the answer.”
