Senators Feinstein and Blumenthal: NRA ‘Irrelevant’ not ‘Credible’

Senators Feinstein and Blumenthal: NRA "Irrelevant"Senators Feinstein (D-CA) and Blumenthal (D-CT) responded to the NRA’s statement and proposal. They criticized the NRA’s proposal to have armed security outside schools following the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut. Senator Feinstein called it a blame tactic and distraction strategy that does not address the issue. Senator Blumenthal said what happened at Sandy Hook was a call for action and if the NRA needs to alter approach if it wants to be a part of this national debate.

“Is this the answer? That America should become an armed camp?” said Feinstein, who is sponsoring legislation to reinstate a ban on assault weapons. “I don’t think so, and I don’t think that’s the American dream.”

Sen. Richard Blumenthal said if the NRA wants to be part of the national conversation about gun violence, it’s not doing itself any favors. “The NRA today in its approach will be irrelevant,” he said, “because it can’t be a credible and constructive participant in this debate if it says the only acceptable solution is armed guards in schools.”
