Madonna dressed as a Boy Scout Saturday night at the GLAAD Media Awards in New York and took on bullying, homophobia and inequality.
Madonna was on hand to present Anderson Cooper with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’s Vito Russo Award, given for openly gay members of the media for making a difference in promoting equality.
The Material Girl’s speech ran nearly 12 minutes before presenting Cooper with his award and she donned the scout uniform to draw attention to what she sees as the Boy Scouts of America’s ‘f**ked-up’ standpoint on LGBT rights and ‘stupid rules’ prohibiting openly gay people from serving.
“I wanted to be a boy scout, but they wouldn’t let me join I think that’s f**ked up.”
“I know how to pitch a tent, I have a very good sense of direction, I can rescue kittens from trees, I want to do good for the community, and most importantly, I know how to scout for boys.”
She went on to talk about support for gay rights noting:
“Most people are not comfortable with things or people that they perceive as different from themselves, and I would wager that if we just took the time to get to know each other, did our own investigation, looked beneath the surface of things that we would find that we’re not so different after all.”
[…]
“When I think about young kids in America who are being bullied and tortured, who are taking their own lives because they feel alone and judged, outcast and misunderstood, I want to sit down and cry a river of tears.”
She also spoke about bullying, religious tolerance, and the imprisonment of the female punk music group Pussy Riot in Russia:
“If President Putin sat in a room with Pussy Riot — he’d probably want to f–k all of them, but anyways. If he did [meet with them] and he had an open dialogue with them about their point of view as young, creative women growing up in modern-day Russia, would he really have allowed them to be dragged away to prison for three years? I mean, think about it, this is insane.”
She later noted:
“I don’t know about you, but I can’t take this shit anymore. That is why I want to start a revolution. It’s 2013 people. We live in America, land of the free and home of the brave? That’s a question, not a statement.”
